History

Bastide Notre Dame was built by the noble de Gassier family in the late 1700s or early 1800s, who themselves have an interesting history.  The church shows 1816 on the door keystone, and was built within the ruins of a much larger building that dates back to the 15th or 16th century.

The property occupies the prominent location over the village and valley below, offering commanding views while still being very private. 

The private church and the pigeon tower on the property were both indications of high status for the era.  Unlike a Mas or farm building which was built for practical use, a Bastide or country house was built primarily to enjoy the location.   An enormous amount of landscaping and terracing was performed for this property, resulting in layers of interesting views.
