Impressive Monastery located in Olite(Navarra), 0.5 hours drive from Pamplona, 2 hours from Bilbao and 3 hours from Madrid.
Saint Francisco of Asis founded the monastery of Olite on his pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in 1213-1214, it being much more modest back then than the present building.
The current monastery was built in 1757 and it is considered the greatest Monastery of Navarra.
It keeps the Gothic façade from the XV century. It has 20.000 m2 of land inside the monastery and 10.000 m2 of buildings (edification) included the monastery and the church.
The monastery is situated very close to the medieval castle of Olite and has impressive views. There are around 110 small bedrooms.The Monastery was closed in December in 2014, due to the fact as nowadays there is a lack of priests.
It has witnessed the social and political upheavals over the centuries.
It was used as a hospital in 1795, during the" War of the Convention" and during the "Second Carlist War" of 1872-1876, and saw the ousting of the monks and partial destruction of the monastery during the War of Independence.
At the moment, after the definitive restoration in 1880, only 2 monks remained.
Since that date it belonged to the Province of Cantabria and imparted theology and philosophy studies until 1976.

The medieval castle has been the seat of the Kings of Navarra from the XIV till the XIX century.
A part of the castle was used to house the Parador hotel in 1950.
Olite is the wine capital of Navarra boasting 8 wineries and is the seat of the council of the Denomination of Origin of Navarra, and also has its own Navarran Wine Museum.
The medieval town of Olite hosts a Classical Theatre Festival in the summers.
